Assignment 1: Advertisement analysis

Black Mountain web banner

Uses serif and sans-serif (bottom logo), a concrete structure and a symmetrical layout.
This web banner displays text groupings in equal frequency. The ad’s main figure is clearly the copy on top of the photograph, which serves as the ad’s ground. The figure and ground interact with each other - the text is positioned along the horizontal lines of the building in the photo, heightening the symmetrical quality of the ad. The even horizontal spacing between letters also contributes to the sense of symmetry. The ad’s text and the background image are color consistent - the band name and album title are in a light-brown color extracted from the ground in the photo.

The Social Network poster

Uses sans-serif font, formal structure and is symmetrical in arrangement.
The poster is balanced in weight and uses the tagline as its primary figure and the photograph as its ground. The poster displays equal frequency in its evenly ruled lines, creating a strong sense of order and symmetry. The ad's main focal point is framed by the subtle elements in the right and bottom edges, giving the impression the ad is being viewed on a Facebook page.

Absolut Vodka print ad

Uses sans-serif and serif (on the bottle), a concrete structure and a symmetrical arrangement.
Great emphasis is placed on the bottle by positioning it in the center and using the contrast of the bright spotlight against the dark lettering on the bottle. The ad displays use of the technique of mirroring in the reflection of the bottle on the bottom of the ad. The simplicity and restraint in the ad's elements makes this ad impactful and highly effective.

Topshop print ad

Uses sans-serif font, an informal structure and an asymmetrical arrangement.
This print ad is balanced to the lower left side and uses the contrast between the logo’s bright color and the black and white photograph to create impact and emphasis. The logo is placed in a seemingly random position on the lower left side of the ad. This ad effectively lets the image communicate the brand message of the ad instead of text.

Joe's Pub banner

Uses sans-serif font, a formal structure and is mostly symmetrical in layout (the positioning of the quote is asymmetrical to the rest of the elements).
The main headline “Joe’s Pub” is balanced to the top left and contains text grouping in the middle and top left of the ad. The contrast of the black background with the light text of the banner makes the banner's message stand out. The text grouping in the center comprises tightly positioned musical genres laid out in opposing slanted directions. In addition, the white space around the centered text grouping places further emphasis on the text grouping.
